Project Details

Background

Client: Nuance Communications
Team: Visual UX Team, Dev Team, Engineering Team, Product Services, Technical Product Managers, VUI Designers
Deliverables: Industry-leading conversational AI tool usability improvements, feature additions and consistency upgrades.
Role: Visual UX Designer
Tools: Sketch, Abstract, Figma, Illustrator

Nuance Mix is a flexible and customizable conversational AI tooling platform designed to empower developers and enterprises to create powerful voice and text-based interactions. With its robust natural language understanding (NLU) engine, developers can build sophisticated virtual assistants, chatbots, and voice-enabled applications that accurately understand and respond to user inputs. See more of Mix here

Mix supports multi-modal interactions, enabling the use of both voice and text inputs, and it can integrate additional modalities such as touch and gestures to create immersive and intuitive experiences. This multi-modal capability allows for building applications across various devices and channels, providing a seamless user experience.

My contribution

More about Mix

As a designer for the Mix platform, I collaborated with a UX team of 8 as well as with cross-functional counterparts in development, engineering and product management, on all new features and product enhancement updates.

New features would be customer-driven or identified internally as necessary for enhancing the experience. After initial specifications were established by a technical product manager, a designer would begin iteration, with consistent communication with their respective feature team to ensure designs were meeting business needs as well as aligning with technical requirements and feasibility.

I was responsible for understanding and designing for all areas of the tool. Whether in NLU, Dialog or Dashboard, each designer had the knowledge or resources to understand the specific problem and the autonomy to create the best possible solution. Best-in-class user experience in a highly-technical product was the expectation. Our process was based on exploration, user research and designing for personas, constructive feedback and collaboration.

Mix is composed of three tools.

As a designer, I created features and enhancements for each. All of these components work together to enable sophisticated and intuitive conversational interactions.

Dashboard

The Mix dashboard acts as an overview area and administrative control hub. It is the destination for project creation, sharing and publishing, the home for analytics, channel creation and management and security settings.

NLU (Natural Language Understanding)

The NLU (Natural Language Understanding) tool in Mix is responsible for analyzing and interpreting user inputs. It is where Mix deciphers what it is the user is saying and what the developer intends to do with those words. This involves parsing the input, identifying the user's intent, extracting relevant entities or parameters, and understanding the overall meaning of the message.

Dialog

Dialog controls the flow of the conversation, orchestrating the exchange of messages between the user and the application's virtual assistant or chatbot. Via sets of nodes on an authoring canvas, users manage the sequence of prompts and responses, handling user inputs and requests, maintaining context across multiple turns of conversation and dynamically adjusting the dialog based on the user’s actions.
